The temple sits on a large offshore rock which has been shaped continuously over the years by the ocean tide. Tanah Lot is claimed to be the work of the 15th century priest Nirartha. During his travels along the south coast he saw the rock-island's beautiful setting and rested there. Some fishermen saw him, and bought him gifts. Nirartha then spent the night on the little island. Later he spoke to the fishermen and told them to build a shrine on the rock for he felt it to be a holy place to worship the Balinese sea gods. The Tanah Lot temple was built and has been a part of Balinese mythology for centuries. The temple is one of seven sea temples around the Balinese coast. Each of the sea temples were established within eyesight of the next to form a chain along the south-western coast. Go at Low Tide to get blessed from the Holy Springs underneath the Temple. Also a very beautiful spot to see the Sunset but it is crowded. If you want to experience the Temple at a quiet time go in the Morning. Also lots of handicraft shops nearby.

BALI'S HOLY MOUNTAINS AND NORTH COAST

http://www.baliadvisor.com/pdf/holy-mountains-north-bali.pdf

Ten Day Bali Itinerary

<div class="MsoNormal" style="border: currentColor; I have created this link to help Bali travellers who want to know what is the ideal time to go to Bali and what to do when your there.

My answer is any time you can get to Bali GO! However Bali is a long way for most travellers so I suggest ideally 7-14 days.

Here is a suggested 10 day Itinerary. The cost depends upon what your budget is and what hotel you stay at. *Please note Bali Advisor can arrange transport and guides for our suggested outings.

Day 1
Arrive in Bali go to your hotel and immediately get a massage. I recommend going to the beach upon arrival in Bali. This gives you time to acclimate and get over jet lag. Which beach you ask. Depends upon your interests, budget and life style. 4 DAYS

Nusa Dua Beach http://www.baliadvisor.com/nusa-dua.html ½ from the airport The Nusa Dua area isolated from the rest of the island is at the Eastern side of the Bukit Peninsula at Southern tip of Bali. The beaches are beautiful long white sand and safe for swimming and the hotels are among the best in Bali. Nusa Dua is very secure as there are 3 man gates checking ID's of anyone entering the area. I prefer this area if you are bringing children to Bali. Water sports activities are plentiful here from diving, snorkeling, fishing, banana boat riding and parasailing

Sanur Beach http://www.baliadvisor.com/sanur-beach.html ½ hour from the airport Sheltered by a coral reef, the grand mountains of central Bali compose a superb view east

across the bay. The popular holiday areas of Kuta, Tuban (south Kuta) and Legian front a gentle curve of coastline just north of the airport. These beaches are for the younger and more active tourist who come to Bali to party.

Seminyak and Canggu http://www.baliadvisor.com/seminyak.html 45minutes to 1 hour from the airport (depends upon time of day) Seminyak is like the Beverley Hills of Bali with mostly upscale and luxury accommodation and fashionable high-end restaurants and bars. It is famous for great waves and stunning sunsets. If you like style and luxury and like to be in with the fashion and in crowd this beach is perfect for you.

NOW YOU HAVE YOUR HOME BASED PICKED OUT FOR THE FIRST 4 NIGHTS HERE ARE SOME ACTIVITIES THAT YOU CAN DO FROM YOUR HOTEL WHEN NOT ON THE BEACH OR IN THE SPA

Day 2
I recommend relaxing at the hotel pool and beach and spa. Spa http://www.baliadvisor.com/bali-spas.html Your hotel will probably have a spa but some can be expensive. When a child is born, he is believed to be the reincarnation of a released ancestor. The Balinese calendar system is quite elaborate and complex. This calendar system, called tika, is consulted whenever a child is born in order to closely determine which ancestor this child may be. For example, if a child is born on the day of Sri according to the eight-day week, the child may be a reincarnation of a woman from the mother’s side; however, should the child be born on the day of Indra, also in the eight-day week, this child may be the reincarnation of a man from the father’s side.
Babies are not considered to be “human” until they are 210 days old at which time a ceremony is performed, along with the necessary offerings. Yet, for the first 42 days of the
baby’s life, both the mother and baby are considered to be in a state of spiritual impurity. A newborn’s feet are not permitted to touch earth and the child is very susceptible to witchcraft. At the end of this period, a small ritual, called Forty-two Days, is performed during which offerings are made to the child’s spirit.

The ceremony of tooth filing, meant to overcome the elements of bestiality occurs right after puberity. The pointe canine teeth are considered and are filed. Marriage is when full adult hood begins and offering are made to placate the demoic forces before sexual desire is excercised.

Cremation is the most important of all Balinese rites of passage. The remains are carried in a tower to the cremation grounds. During the procession to the cremation grounds, the cremation tower is twirled so as to confuse the spirit of the deceased. This is to help ensure he won’t find his way back home and further ensures his spirit’s smooth passage into the next world (swah). Should the ceremony or the offerings contain an omission, a family member or spirit-medium will become possessed and told how to make things right. Once the cremation is completed, the ashes of the deceased are gathered up and holy water is sprinkled; the ashes are then cast into the sea.

Bali's Temples

In every village in Bali, there are several temples and at least one small one in each home. One can therefore safely say that there are more temples than homes in Bali. Most of these temples are shrines and might not be regarded as actual temples, but the number of walled compounds are believed to reach to a total of 10,000. The word for temple in Bali is pura, which in Sanskrit means 'space surrounded by a wall'. Simple shrines or thrones are found everywhere and at all sorts of unusual places.

Although many temples are quiet and uninhabited, they are transformed into colorful, active and ornately decorated places of worship when there is a festival. Offerings would be made, while performances of traditional dances and gamelan, cockfighting and gambling liven up the atmosphere.

All temples derive their orientation from the mountains and the sea. Kaja, which is the direction toward the mountains, is the most significant direction. The direction toward the sea is kelod. Sunrise, or kangin.

Bali is known as the Island of the Gods. There are thousands of temples in Bali but none are precisely alike. The Balinese temples (pura) are an exposed areas encircled by walls. This is
because the Balinese Gods do not abide permanently in the temples but are invited from their abode above Gunung Agung,Bali's largest volcano, and need a open air a temple unroofed at the top so they can descend and settle in their shrines during festive occasions. Temple Types There are three basic types of temple in every village.

The Pura Dalem would have representations of Durga, the dark and terrible side of Shiva's wife, Parvati. Both Shiva and Parvati have a creative and destructive side, and it is their powers of destruction that are honored in the Pura Dalem. It is here where the souls of the dead in their first stage after death are purified as not to bring harm to the village..

Since rice is such an important produce in Bali, there are temples dedicated to the spirits of irrigated agriculture. These temples are called Pura Puseh (temple of origin) remains the most prominent and is reserved for founders of villages. It is always situated at the kaja(towards the mountains) end of the village. In the middle of the village is the Pura Desa, which is for the spirits that protect and bless the villagers in their daily lives.

The (Pura Bale Agung) is sometimes attached to the Pura Desa or is in the center of the village. These are meeting places to share ritual meals on auspicious days with each other and defied ancestors because they are founders of the social order At the kelod(towards the sea) end of the village is the Pura Dalem or temple of the dead. It is here where the souls of the dead in their first stage after death are purified as not to bring harm to the village.. Pura Subak or Pura Ulun Suwi. There are also agricultural temples, which are usually small shrines in the rice fields. It is here where the Balinese can thank the gods, especially Dewi Sri, from whom they receive blessings and fertility for their work.

Balinese temples are generally separated into two or three sectors: a front court yard, which contains the bale. While attending ceremonies remember these are religious occasions. Pura Tamen Ayun in Mengwi and the largest and most holy temple in Bali Pura Besakih. Rather than belonging to homes or villages these state temples belong to districts or in the case of Pura Beskih all of Bali. Kulkul or slit drum tower. This drum summons the villagers to work or to announce the presence of the arrival of the gods. There is usually a balepawaregan or kitchen where women cook the rice and rice cakes necessary for communal offerings and the shed like building is the bale paebatan, where the men prepare the meat for offerings. In the central courtyard is the bale agung or meeting hall and pavilion for the gamelan orchestra.

Most of the dances are performed in this central courtyard. The innermost temple is intended for the actual reception of the gods. Shrines and altars are usually arranged in a row. It is here where the offerings are placed and the gods can receive their essence. The bale pawedaan is a pavilion where the Brahman priest conducts rites to produce holy water. Always where a sarong and sash. Do not walk infront of people praying nor sit or stand higher than the priest. Avoid using flash cameras and obey the directions of the attendants. Women are not allowed to enter the temples when menstruating.

Cinta Means Love and In Bali you will love to Eat here.

<img border="0" height="217" m$="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4IG28fmbvcE/Th9lcN9Tr2I/AAAAAAAAADQ/wcr7Qre1IH8/s320/Cinta+Grill.jpg" width="320" />Cinta Grill
While walking along Ubud's Monkey Forest Road you will see the Cinta Grill owned by Karen and Guski, long time friends of mine and have become very successful with 4 restaurants in Ubud, plus a catering service. I always give my tour members sarongs and sashes when they arrive in Bali.

You must dress decently for temple visits, which means a sarong and sash. If you don't have a sarong, at least wear long pants for men and women a dress that covers knees and shoulders for women (or a skirt with a blouse, etc). At most temples there is a donation box with a book for registering at the entrance. You should always put a donation in the box. A couple dollars in rupiah.

Do not climb onto the temple buildings or walls.

Do not stand or sit higher than a priest.

Do not stand directly in front of the priest, or walk in front of the kneeling congregation. You must also not remain standing when people kneel to pray.

If people are praying, avoid getting between them and direction in which they are praying.

Use camera with discretion. Do not uses flash when the devotees are praying, it will be better not to use flash at all.

By ancient law, menstruating women are banned from the temples, due to general sanction against blood in holy area same prohibition applies to people with open wound.

Volcano Climbing in Bali

<img border="0" height="212" i$="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lgeXIuZuif8/TgNMu6-QirI/AAAAAAAAAC4/zp52agvFOWw/s320/BATUR+VOLCANO.jpg" width="320" />I have climbed Mt. Agung Climb
Towering 3,142 metres above sea level, Mount Agung is the highest mountain on the island of
Bali and the fifth highest in the whole of Indonesia. Mount Agung has huge spiritual significance to the people of the island, and is home to the 'Mother Temple' of Besakih. It forms part of a chain of volcanos that make up the back bone of Bali.

The best time to climb Mount Agung is in the dry season of April to October. January and February should certainly be avoided if possible due to heavy rain, possible flooding and even landslides in the area. At lower elevations it remains tropical but becomes distinctly cold and often very windy on the high bare rock slopes.

Mount Agung is most commonly approached from the south via Klungkung and Candi Dasa from the west via Besakih, or from the east via Karangasem. The east coast road north from Amed through Tulamben and onto Singaraja provides some awe-inspiring views of the mountain across flat rubble plans.

Mount Agung is viewed as sacred and for that reason is off limits to climbers during important ceremonies. Your guide will know and will also be able to obtain any necessary permissions from temple administrators for which some nominal donation may be required. Guide fees may vary between about Rp 400,000 and Rp 1,000,000 depending on how you arrange the guide, the route taken and the level of English expected.

There are three climbing routes up the mountain, all are difficult and unless you are physically fit and have some serious trekking experience, do not even attempt any of these climbs. The service of a local guide is absolutely essential. Guides can be arranged in advance via your hotel (especially if you are staying in Candi Dasa or Amed .

Honeymoon in Bali

In Bali, a honeymoon is known as Bulan Maduh.

Bali, the fabled "Island of the Gods", is the ultimate honeymoon destination with its magical allure of misty volcanoes, golden beaches and azure waters. Every square inch of Bali offers a fresh and beautiful image that will live with you forever.

Planning a honeymoon is a very personal experience and trusted expert advice is what we offer to help make your honeymoon unforgettable. Rather than providing packaged deals we will help you customize your plans with choices of location and activities that will fit your budget.

This is a 3-step process which starts with booking the air.

Please go to our Airfares page and choose the desired carrier and route you wish to go.

View my list of the Honeymoon Hotels and Spas that I recommend. The usual stay is around 7 days. I recommend some time at the beach and then some time in the hills to experience the culture of Bali. Of course, it's your special trip and ultimately it's up to you. The hotels and spas range in prices. I have special rates at these properties that are lower than what you see on the hotel's web sites.

The next step is booking the suggested outings that you may want to take to experience the true beauty of Bali. As an International destination the Restaurants are extremely cosmopolitan, yet inexpensive. Bali is also a shopper's paradise. You will find locally made jewelry, sarongs, clothing, wood carvings and paintings. For those of you seeking to experience the culture of Bali you will find peace and tranquility in the hills near the village of Ubud. Or visit peaceful Lake Bratan, nestled between the volcanoes of Bali's highlands.

More active honeymooners can Raft down the Ayung River or take the Catamaran Cruise to nearby Nusa Lembongan. There's also Diving at Amed beach and Cycling amid scenery you will never forget. Bali is also a renowned Surfing destination with some of the world's best waves. When the sun sets choices are still hard to make. A perfect way to end the evening is to watch a spectacular Balinese Dance.

I would be happy to guide you, to assist you, and help make your Honeymoon the very special, unforgettable occasion that it is meant to be. Additional stopovers, on allowed routing, available for a small charge per stop.
Children's Discounts available.
No Fares are guaranteed until ticketed. http://www.baliadvisor.com/bali-airfare.html

Letter from the King of Bhutan

I would like to share these thoughts from the King of Bhutan from a speech that he gave in India : "I truly believe that the only way to observe the most important things in life and in this world is by putting them through the lens of "Simplicity". You must break everything down to the fundamentals; break it down to the basic human instances. For, in the end no matter what country we may be from, we are human beings. No matter what our cultures and beliefs may be, we share the same needs and abide by the same fundamental values. In fact, it may be these very values that could guide us, through the great problems, even those of environmental degradation, terrorism and world poverty. Perhaps the first of these values is the sense of a shared planet. This is a world that is shared -not between governments and nations but among us- the people-The image of a shared planet must always be present in our minds-It is wrong to assume that a huge step to finding solutions to global problems and averting future crises, will be taken if we can think in the spirit of community and fraternity, not as individual entities? When we accept that this world of people all alike, of families all alike, of communities all alike, of countries facing the same challenges, of human beings ultimately seeking the same thing, then we will truly be in a position to foster well being security and happiness."
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; The most popular spots are: Kuta and Legian beach which is hollow barrels over sand bars, and Uluwatu, a very difficult left hander for experienced surfers only. Other spots include Canguuu and Medwi, which is north of Kuta. During the right time of year, you can find a right hander off the coral reef on the Sanur side.

Making For The Breaks

There are many breaks on the outer islands including Lomboc and Nusa Lembongan. You can rent boards in Bali along Kuta beach(better to rent from shops) and there are shops in the Kuta area selling boards, as well as a surf school. May through September is the Dry season and usually the peak surfing season. Water temperatures are always around 80degrees so only board shorts are required.

I first traveled to Bali in 1974 to go surfing when very few Balinese surfed and few Aussies were there. My favorite breaks are: Uluwatu, a reef break very a hallow and fast left; Kuta Beach is a beach break perfect for beginner surfers as well as experts. The waves are short but you don't have to paddle out very far to reach the break. Padang Padang and Balangan beach are also reef breaks,on the Bukit peninsula, but only for experts;Canggu is a more isolated beach break good for beginners and further to the west is Balian, a river mouth with a sand bottom. Nusa Dua and Sanur beach are both reef breaks but better in the Wet Season October through April.
Jim Cramer
7075668078www.BaliAdvisor.com
www.Spirit-Tour.com

Traditional Healers of Bali

Evidence of the existence of traditional healers in Bali date back to the 1300's, yet the healers practicing today are an amalgam of the techniques of indigenous healers and the influence of Hinduism, just as the Hinduism of Bali is an amalgam of indigenous animism, Buddhism and the Hinduism of India. As the influence of the Hindu religion permeates all aspects of life in Bali, it is also at the core of the treatment used by the Balian.

The Balinese religion incorporates tantric aspects of deliverance through magico-religious means (this influence being from the ancient east Javanese kingdoms). The Balian incorporates these various philosophical approaches to produce a cosmology of healing and "dis-ease". The Balians The system of traditional medicine in Bali has become institutionalized in the culture and specialization both in technique and expertise exist. The Balian Apun utilize physical manipulation of the body and set broken bones; the Balian Manak are midwives; the Balian Tenung are diviners; the Balian Metuunan are those who are able to be possessed by souls of the dead. These are the specialists.

The majority of traditional healers are generalists who treat a variety of conditions and are known as either Balian Usada or Balian Tapakan. The Balian Usada, often referred to as a literate healer, aquire their skills by formalized study of classical texts on the subject of healing (the "usadas'). They specialize in the use of the ancient palm leaf manuscripts (lontar) to give advise and treatment after eliciting symptoms from the client. The Balian Usada go through a process of apprenticeship to prepare for consecration (mawinten) by the community and the Hindu religion. Every month on this day, extra offerings are made around the family compound and some offerings are placed on the ground at the entrance to the house compound.

The towering offerings called sesajen are also taken to the village temple. Depending on the time of the year, many temples usually will hold various forms of entertainment for the village such as dancing, wayang performances, or arja plays to coincide with the special prayers for Purnama.

Purnama is considered a good day for planting, especially for plants that bear fruit. It is common for Balinese to delay planting until the day of the full moon, when they are more assured of a successful harvest. Some people believe that bathing in water perfumed by fragrant petals of the frangipani flower, under the light of the full moon will wash away your sins, while ensuring that you will remain youthfully attractive. Many travelers wonder what is appropriate temple etiquette and what should they wear when visiting a temple. These are important questions and with the right information your visit to a Balinese temple will be a beautiful experience because the local people will be moved by your respect.

Here are some rules that have to be observed by the visitors in visiting a temple in Bali.
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ui6OyybfDGA/TaiMwoN5lLI/AAAAAAAAMUw/59WJ9R6GRdQ/s1600/Dallas+CSL+Bali.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; You must dress decently for temple visits, which means a sarong and sash. If you don’t have a sarong, at least wear long pants for men and women a dress that covers knees and shoulders for women (or a skirt with a blouse, etc). At most temples there is a donation box with a book for registering at the entrance. You should always put a donation in the box. A couple dollars in rupiah. I always give my tour members sarongs and sashes when they arrive in Bali
2. Do not climb onto the temple buildings or walls.

3. Do not stand or sit higher than a priest.

4. Do not stand directly in front of the priest, or walk in front of the kneeling congregation. You must also not remain standing when people kneel to pray.

5. If people are praying, avoid getting between them and direction in which they are praying.

6. Use camera with discretion. Do not uses flash when the devotees are praying, it will be better not to use flash at all.

7. By ancient law, menstruating women are banned from the temples, due to general sanction against blood in holy area same prohibition applies to people with open wound.

Lawar, A Balinese Delicacy

If you would like to know more about one of my favorite Balinese delicacies, Lawar, please visit our site at:

http://www.baliadvisor.com/food-lawar.html

Chinese influence plays a heavy part in the Indonesian history, not only because there is a large Chinese population in many cities in Indonesia, but also because they bring their culture that somehow assimilates with local culture. This process has left its mark in architecture, cuisine, dance, songs, and fashion….including batik.

According to the history, Cirebon, a city on the coast of Java was famous for its harbor that was packed with merchants vessels from all over Indonesia and abroad. Sunan Gunung Jati, one of the Islamic leaders in Java, established the kingdom of Cirebon known as Kingdom of Pakungwati. He was the only Sunan (Islamic Leader) to have become a king. Gunungjati fully utilizes his kingship to propagate Islam along the coastal area of Cirebon to the most remote area of Pasundan or Priangan and developing Islamic teaching in Cirebon.

He was married to a Chinese princess named Nio Ong Tien, an important figure in developing the strong artistic force in the Cirebon court. She brought an attention to the arts, especially ceramics. The classic ceramics motives from China are heavily influenced batik motives. Hence, came the blend of Cirebon-China batik motives, with ornate phoenixes, peonies, cranes and a mythical beast combining aspects of the lion, dragon and birds. One of the most famous Cirebon batik motives is Megamendung. Megamendung suggests rain, and therefore, life, for an often parched land. This cloud motif is also combined with roosters hidden among a tracery of leaves and vines. This motif is dominated by layers of blue with different shades. Dark blue refers to dark rain clouds, the life-giver, while pale blue symbolizes the brighter hope in the future.

Getting Married? This exfoliation and body polishing treatment is now famous in Bali for everyone. The health practitioner makes a paste of sandalwood, turmeric, ground nuts, rice and other scented woods. The paste is then painted on the body which exfoliates the body during the time it is left to dry. The dried paste is then gently rubbed off, which polishes and exfoliates the skin. This treatment is followed by a hot shower and then a yogurt mix is wiped over the body restoring balance to the skin. It's easy to hear why. With its complex, polyrhythmic sounds played out on perfectly tuned gongs and chimes, gamelan music is one of the most exciting and exotic sounds heard in the world. It's gorgeous to listen to, thrilling to witness, and sounds like nothing else on earth. On The Roots of Gamelan, we're given a real treat: the earliest commercially available recordings of gamelan music.

What Is There To Do In Bali?

There is so much to do in Bali, including relaxing with no agenda at all.
